46 Years of Durga Puja in Bremen
In the early 1980s, the first Indian families arrived in Bremen—with young children, modest means, and a strong determination to preserve their culture. Far from home, in a Germany that was still not very multicultural, they made a decision: their traditions would not fade away.
With makeshift idols, spices brought from India, and homemade decorations in rented halls, something lasting took shape—a community. What began as a small, private celebration is now one of the oldest and most significant Durga Puja traditions in northern Germany: 46 years of living culture, faith, and solidarity.
A Legacy in New Hands
Today, we stand on the shoulders of these pioneers. Their expectation was never spoken aloud, but it was always palpable: that we carry on the tradition, preserve the values, and breathe new life into the community.
We see this as a privilege, not a burden. Our task is to combine experience with energy—the knowledge and emotional connection of the first generation with the skills and ideas of the younger generation. Digital networking, modern organization, and fresh enthusiasm meet decades of experience and ritual knowledge.
